Baby Chicks Have Arrived!

Twenty-seven chicks came in the mail yesterday! They were in a little box all squished together and cheep-cheep-cheeping like crazy. Here is a great little video of chicks pecking the lens!

We put the chicks in the laundry room in a plastic box with a heat lamp, water, and food. We had to sprinkle some food on the floor and then dip each chick’s beak in the sugar water so they would know where to drink from. We weren’t allowed to keep the door open, because Lucy and J.J. might hurt them. (Lucy got in once already!)

We got one mystery chick. We named it Acorn because it is brown. He has feathery legs. Every day we have to change the newspaper liner and give the chicks new food and water. The laundry room STINKS! It’s amazing that those cute, tiny chicks can make things smell SO bad! Daddy says we shouldn’t change the liner but every few days, but we secretly do it anyway! Haha, Daddy -Mommy’s on our team!

We use the heat lamp to keep the chickadees warm. We have to put a thermometer in the box to monitor the temperature because the chicks could die if they are too hot or too cold. The chicks like to densely pack themselves when they are cold. They huddle away from the light when they are hot.

Every day, we gather grass. The grass keeps them from pecking each other.

Sawyer loves to run in the laundry room to check on everyone in their “beeootiful home”. He says that Acorn is HIS, so we hope Acorn will survive...She seems to be the tiniest.

We are assuming that we have all ladies, but you never know. We are praying that we didn’t get any roosters. We decided to buy the chicks so we can start an egg selling business. In about five months we will get about two dozen eggs a day, so we need to start advertising soon. We will need to figure out how we will get the eggs to the house from the barn because bringing up only a few eggs have resulted in disasters before (I found a really old egg in my raincoat pocket on the first day of school! Who knows how old it was! Mommy had to CUT out my pocket!) We will probably deliver the eggs on our bikes…unless it’s too bumpy on our road. When we ordered the chicks, we started a spreadsheet to keep track of all the money we spend on our business. It will help us calculate our profits after we pay Mommy and Daddy back. We hope to make a LOT of money!

Olivia has decided on 27 names for our new babies…she is CONVINCED that she can tell them apart! Here they are, in her own spelling: Mingming, Linne, Richard, Susie, Katie, Sidney, Max, John, Tuck, Natalie, Abi, Mary, Chloe, Amy, Sophie, Isabel, Rebecca, Gorgia, Madisin, Evelin, Cynthia, Elesea, Madeline, Silvia, Acorn, Cloudy, and Cupcake.
